Infertile is a loose description labeling a couple who have been having frequent unprotected sex for a year without conceiving. It is a reversible label as opposed to sterility which has the same outcome but without any hope of producing a child in the future. Many couples who show signs of infertility with no baby after a year, go on to produce a family once the stress, excess weight, unhealthy lifestyle and other barriers to fertility are removed. If you have already produced a child, you may be classed as having secondary infertility if you are having trouble having a baby the second time around.

What signs of infertility will your OB/GYN be looking for at your first consultation?

You will each be asked to provide a detailed medical history – childhood illnesses, prior pregnancies or miscarriages, alcohol and cigarette consumption, previous surgery and medication, injury to or infections of the reproductive organs, methods of contraception to date, weight and ages of both partners.

Other possible signs of infertility could be inferred from the number of previous sexual partners you have each had, a history of STDs, how frequently you have sex now, whether either experience pain during sex, ejaculatory or impotence problems, age at puberty and many many questions aimed at menstruation – frequency, duration and blood flow. If you are able to chart your temperature for a few weeks or months prior to the appointment, this information is a crucial sign of infertility or fertility, and will indicate whether you are ovulating normally. An ovulation kit will help you to chart this if you are unsure.

Other signs of infertility that your doctor will be looking at are: the possibility of hormonal problems which manifest in unusual hairiness in the woman, plus oily hair and acne and a tendency to overweight (all possible signs of PCOS). In the male s/he will be looking for undescended testicles, childhood mumps, however a simple sperm sample will confirm or rule out male infertility, sub fertility or sterility.

The consultation may seem daunting but the sooner the problem is found, the sooner treatment can begin. Once the cause has been isolated statistics are encouraging, with 80 to 85% of previously infertile couples, going on to produce a family. So thats all the more reason to book that appointment now, to see whether those signs of infertility can be made to point in the other direction.
